More Than a Service Call

When Jack Smoak founded this company in 1972, he was not just starting a business. He was planting roots in a community he loved. More than 50 years later, that sense of belonging and responsibility still drives everything we do.

Taking care of Charleston means more than keeping homes comfortable. It means showing up for our neighbors in ways that go beyond the service call, supporting the organizations doing good work in our community, and using the platform we have built over generations to make a real difference.

Giving back is not a program we launched. It is simply part of who we are.

The 4 Degree Guarantee

One of our favorite ways to give back is one that brings a little fun to the forecast.

Through our partnership with a local Charleston news station, we put our money where our meteorology is. When the station’s weather prediction lands within 4 degrees of the actual temperature, Smoak’s Comfort Control makes a donation to a local nonprofit. It is our way of turning something we all pay attention to, the Charleston weather, into an opportunity to do some good.

If you have seen our commercial, you may have already heard about it. We think it captures something true about who we are: a local company that is genuinely invested in this community, willing to have a little fun, and always looking for creative ways to give back to the people who have supported us for so long.

Where the Forecast Takes Us

The 4 Degree Guarantee is a little fun with the weather — but the payoff is real support for organizations doing important work across Charleston. Here’s where it’s gone recently:

  • Darkness to Light — $1,000 raised
  • American Foundation for Suicide Prevention — $1,050 raised
  • My Sister’s House — $1,050 raised
  • Camp Rise Above — $1,150 raised

We update this list as the forecasts roll in, so check back to see who we’re supporting next.

Supporting Our Local Community

Over the years, we have been proud to support a wide range of local organizations and community programs throughout the Charleston area. Our involvement has included sponsoring youth soccer and baseball teams, supporting City of Charleston gymnastics programs, and contributing to local schools, churches, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, and other civic organizations and nonprofits. We believe strong communities are built through consistent support, and we are honored to give back to the people and organizations that help make Charleston such a special place to call home.

Rooted in Charleston, Invested in Its People

Charleston has given a great deal to our family over the years. Three generations of Smoaks have built careers, raised families, and found community here. That is not something we take lightly.

We recognize that a thriving community is built by the people and organizations that show up consistently, not just when it is convenient. That is the standard we try to hold ourselves to, in our service work and in our community involvement. When local nonprofits need support, when neighbors are struggling, when there is an opportunity to lend our name or our resources to something meaningful, we want to be the kind of company that raises its hand.

We also know that the people who call us for a heating repair or a plumbing fix are the same people coaching youth sports, volunteering at local shelters, and keeping Charleston’s neighborhoods strong. Serving them well is its own form of giving back, and we never forget that.

A Legacy of Care

What makes a family business last more than 50 years in a competitive market? Part of the answer is technical skill and reliable service. But a bigger part is trust, and trust is built through consistent action over a long period of time.

We have worked hard to earn that trust through every job we complete and every relationship we build. Our community involvement is an extension of the same values that have guided this company since 1972: show up, do the right thing, and take care of the people around you.

We are grateful to serve this community. We are proud to invest in it. And we look forward to continuing that work for the generations to come.
